Cognitive testing – when you want an accurate indication of the ability to perform, solve complex problems and learn information

They are now a normal part of any recruitment process: intelligence tests, logic tests, aptitude tests, ability tests, etc. Yes, there are many names for many things. But whatever they’re called, there’s a good reason why cognitive tests are and should be part of the recruitment process.

When hiring a new employee, the candidate needs to be a personal and professional match to maximize success in the job and achieve the best results. This is backed up by research where studies have shown a strong correlation between intelligence, cognitive ability and the ability to perform in a job. With cognitive tests, it is possible to get an accurate indication of how quickly and accurately a person can learn and solve new tasks without prior knowledge.

What do cognition and intelligence mean?

When psychologist Charles Spearman discovered that people who do well in one type of cognitive task also do well in all others, he proposed that the brain has a general cognitive ability: the g-factor. This g-factor corresponds to what is commonly understood by intelligence. The G-factor can be thought of as the brain’s work store. When you read a text, it is stored in your brain to a certain extent. The G-factor (intelligence) indicates how quickly the text is perceived, how well the context is understood, to what extent it can be put into context with other knowledge and how quickly it is forgotten.

Cognition means working with and measuring human mental abilities and cognitive processes, such as perception, thinking and experience. Our cognitive abilities are about how quickly and accurately we process information in different forms, such as verbal, abstract or numerical. In addition, our cognitive abilities also include the speed of information processing. This concept of speed refers to how quickly you move from perceiving and acquiring knowledge, to retaining it, organizing it and applying it in different situations. For example, this can be used to assess how well a candidate can adapt to changing conditions and demands.

In short, intelligence refers to the ability to perceive, comprehend and understand things, while cognitive abilities relate to how quickly and accurately information is processed and stored in the brain.
